Buildings & Infrastructure

The built environment is a crucial sector for our economy. Every day we live in buildings that have been created by the construction industry. The value of buildings and infrastructure represents an important part of our capital and supports the economic strength of our society and the vitality and health of its people. Construction industry can make an important contribution to the sustainability of our society by reducing energy consumption, generating sustainable energy and reducing waste, as well as promoting circularity in the use of materials. Not only in terms of the execution of construction projects, but also by integrating sustainability into the design of buildings and infrastructure.

In addition to sustainability, maintaining the existing infrastructure and buildings is a challenge. Both buildings and existing infrastructure are ageing. Through innovation and research TNO contributes to maintenance and cost-effective repair and renovation.

We are increasingly innovating in field labs together with our partners and customers. Good examples are the monitoring of the Brienenoord bridge, BuildInG in Groningen, where work is being done together with Hanze University of Applied Sciences on the development of reinforcement techniques, and the Nero Zero house in Heerhugowaard, where innovative ventilation and climate control systems are being demonstrated.
