Data-driven integrated growing systems: guaranteed cultivation performance through the use of big data in the greenhouse horticulture sector.
TNO is working on the further development of digital cultivation with the help of big data and ICT. Digital cultivation is the future of innovations in the greenhouse horticulture sector and goes beyond the mere construction of a greenhouse: by offering support in cultivation and business management, the suppliers of greenhouses can provide guarantees on cultivation performance.
Data driven integrated growing systems meet the demand from the market to provide insight into and improve greenhouse performance. Within Stichting Hortivation we are developing a platform in cooperation with greenhouse and ICT companies to collect data flows from horticultural companies. Like information about labour, climate and irrigation. By comparing and analysing data from greenhouses in different parts of the world, an optimal cultivation strategy can be developed for locations. In addition, the data flow from the greenhouses makes it easier for the horticultural suppliers to optimise and improve their products.
Dutch supply companies have a leading position worldwide in building and equipping greenhouses. With the CASTA greenhouse construction programme, TNO has made a substantial contribution to the expansion and success of Dutch greenhouse builders, also from an international point of view. Data sharing enables companies to innovate greenhouses and provide additional services. And these innovations are a must to stay ahead of the competition. Research and development are vitally important to the Netherlands in order to maintain its leading international position as a supplier to the greenhouse horticulture sector. The collaboration between the companies and TNO in Hortivation means that together we can serve a broader international market.
