Sustainability and decarbonization are amongst the main societal challenges today, while allowing for the increase of demands on energy and resources. It is of utmost importance to minimize the impact of the chemical industry on additional pollution by designing products and processes that minimize the use and generation of hazardous substances, e.g. implementing “green chemistry”.

TNO is actively involved in the application of green chemistry solutions to the industrial chemicals production, by focusing on the development of chemical production processes from biobased feedstock and through sustainable processing. TNO has rich expertise in the development of chemical production processes with an own mastered approach, from idea to proof-of-principle, patenting, process development and application testing. Techno-economic analysis is performed and refined along the development of the technology.

  • Construction of laboratory/pilot scale testing units;
  • Techno-economic analysis of chemicals production at various stages of process development;
  • Biobased and organic chemistry;
  • Electrochemistry, electrochemical process development, modelling of electrochemical conversions;
  • Separation processes.

Our expertise enables us to provide efficient solutions in implementation of “green” chemicals production processes, such as electrochemical conversion, mainly from biomass based, but also from fossil based resources.
SPES is involved in a few shared research programs (SRP/JIC). In Biorizon, we are involved in investigations into the conversion of sugars into furanics and explores the potential of transforming these into aromatics, both in terms of IP and techno-economic viability. TNO has been involved in many international projects in the field, such as Bio-QED, Waste2Aromatics, BIO-HArT, BioConSept, and more.

In Voltachem, we focus on energy/process intensification: the direct use of electrons and photons (selectively) to create chemicals, hydrogen or heat. Particularly of interest is the development of electrochemical conversion processes for the production of fine and bulk chemicals, starting from fundamentals to large scale demonstration installations. TNO has been involved in many international projects, including B2B, in the field of electro-organic synthesis, such as electrochemical production of monomers for bio-polymers, as well as synthesis of hydrogen peroxide and electrochemical water treatment.
