TNO recently joined forces with ICT experts and greenhouse builders to develop a central data hub: Data Driven Integrated Growing Systems (DDINGS). As in the dairy sector, data sharing plays a crucial role here. In greenhouse horticulture, systems measure and collect all the details about, for example, work, climate conditions and water supply. This information can be accessed and enriched via the datahub. On this basis, the grower can immediately see what he needs to do to ensure that his company functions optimally. Ultimately, the computer can also control the greenhouses independently. By responding directly to small changes, the ideal growing conditions for the plant can be achieved and sustainable cultivation can be guaranteed.

Within Stichting Hortivation, TNO works with a large number of greenhouse builders, installers and ICT companies on in-depth research into the optimum cultivation strategy. We do this by, among other things, looking at how crops grow in different parts of the world. Thanks to self-managing cultivation systems, it is possible to manage several greenhouses worldwide remotely. By combining crop cultivation and smart technology, we can not only produce more sustainably, but also maintain the Netherlands’ leading position in international horticulture.
