Digitalisation in arable framing

The more detailed you can pinpoint the condition of the crops, the better and more specific care you can take of them and the fewer nutritional supplements and pesticides are needed. On the basis of various datasets collected in the field, TNO is working on smart algorithms that will determine the optimal care right down to plant level. For example, by making use of manure and pesticides only where necessary.

TNO and Kvernerland are experimenting with a crop sprayer that only sprays pesticides where necessary. If the crops are still small, drones are used to map the fields to make the weeds clearly visible. This information is used to develop a weed recognition model.

FUTURE OF ARABLE FARMING

With the arrival of the 5G network, the process of monitoring, the interpretation of the datasets and the control of agricultural tools and machinery can become increasingly automated and can be done with the aid of the cloud. With these new technologies, agricultural enterprises are gradually transforming into technological tours de force, where highly efficient and sustainable production can even be achieved remotely. In the 5G Fieldlab in North Groningen TNO, together with partners, is testing all possible applications of this fast wireless internet in arable farming.

DIGITIALSATION WITH RESPECT FOR THE ENTREPRENEUR

TNO helps partners in the agricultural sector with digitisation and the efficient and secure use of each other's data. We do this with technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI). This will enable us to better analyse processes and develop new services for arable farming. Business-sensitive information is shared in our system, but is not visible to all and sundry. The data is encrypted with encryption technologies such as Multi Party Computation and used to enable all parties in the sector to make better choices. Increasingly, this is even done automatically.

TNO brings parties together, develops the architecture based on the requirements of the sector and uses knowledge about sensors, IT architectures and models. In this way, we make clear the added value of data sharing and we also ensure that competing companies join forces.
