Sustainable Urban Mobility and Safety:innovative measures and integrated solutions for mobility, quality of life and safety
The majority of the world's population lives in urban areas. In these areas many different activities come together, such as living, working and recreation, and the need for travel is linked to this. Combining these activities places greater pressure on the sustainable mobility, safety and liveability of the cities and their environment, leading to complex problems.
In addition, mobility experts expect a growth in road traffic, which means that the loss of travel time in 2021 will be 38% higher than in 2015. As a result, for the medium term it is predicted that the Netherlands will get stuck and cities will become unreachable if we do nothing. The call for more investment in rail and roads becomes louder and attention for measures and integrated solutions is increasing. Department of Sustainable Urban Mobility and Safety (SUMS) of TNO develops and investigates, with the use of multidisciplinary knowledge and new (ICT) technology, smart innovative measures and integrated solutions for the domains of mobility, liveability and safety.
SUMS has the ambition to support (inter) national governments and industry with the design (PLAN), the implementation (DO), monitoring and evaluation (CHECK) and then timely adjustment and scaling (ACT) of smart innovative measures in the physical (living) environment.
The aim here is to find the optimal balance between the needs of users (workers, residents, travelers, recreationists, entrepreneurs, security services) with regard to mobility and safety and on the other hand the quality of the living environment.
SUMS is a department that cooperates frequently with other TNO departments and therefore fits well with the TNO strategy. At SUMS knowledge is at the basis, which is applied with the help of data & models for quantitative analyzes. From the data & models we distill decision information that we display with good visualizations generated by tools. For example, we can show the effects of mobility measures on liveability and thus provide decision-supporting information to governments and industry (especially industry) in the areas covered by us. In our tools, our knowledge is unlocked in a transparent, fast and visually attractive way. Examples of SUMS tools are Urban Strategy for integrated urban planning and SimSmartMobility for the simulation of effects of Smart Mobility measures.
